HISTORY
Older and less popular than their close cousin the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has deep roots in the United Kingdom. They were used to hunt vermin, guard farms and, despite their size, herd cattle for over 3,000 years. Corgis, translating to "dwarf dog" in Welsh, are a native of Wales. They were recognized by the AKC in 1935.

Personality
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a born herder. They are super smart, energetic and very athletic for a small dog. They are generally level headed and loyal to their owner, but are sometimes wary of strangers. They need a consistent pack structure, and will not tolerate a number of leaders. If given the leeway, they will easily develop "small dog syndrome," which means that they think themselves in charge. .
Color
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi can be seen in red, brindle, black and tan, black, blue and tan, and blue. All-white Corgis are not considered acceptable under AKC standards.
Health Concerns
While the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has a high life expectancy, they have several health problems such as:
- Thyroid problems
- Spinal problems
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
- Obesity
Appearance
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi, like all other Corgis, looks like someone glued tiny dog legs on a medium-sized dog body. They have large, pointed ears that stand erect atop their fox shaped head. Their body is study, but very low to the ground, and their tail is medium length, unlike their Pembroke cousins who have no tail at all. They also have a short to medium length coat.
